CONTINUING EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS
For PTA Volunteers, Teachers, Counselors, Nurses & School Staff
Applications Due – November 15
Purpose – California State PTA offers scholarships ($500) to encourage PTA members to continue their education and pursue studies in higher education in California.
The Continuing Education Scholarship Program recognizes volunteer service by providing funds for PTA members to register for courses at accredited colleges, universities, trade or technical schools in the State.
- $500-$1,000 Volunteer Service Scholarship — This scholarship recognizes graduating seniors for their volunteer service in schools and communities, allowing them to register for courses at accredited colleges, universities, trade or technical schools. Applicants must be PTA members graduating from a California high school between January 1 and June 30 of the current academic year.
General Eligibility – For the Continuing Education Scholarships, all successful applicants for a Continuing Education Scholarship meet the following criteria:
- Current member of PTA unit in good standing
- Specific criteria for the type of Continuing Education Scholarship applied for – Parent Volunteer, Credentialed Teachers and Counselors or School Nurses – as outlined on application form
- Scholarship used for advanced studies at accredited colleges, universities, trade or technical schools in California
- Scholarship utilized during the period January 1 to December 31 with courses completed by December 31 of year following award of scholarship
- Provide proof of enrollment and completion of coursework to California State PTA by June 1
- Completed application and reference forms with letters received by California State PTA by November 15
Selection – Each year, the California State PTA Scholarship and Grant Committee carefully reads and vets each application. All applicants are notified of their status in January.
Successful applicants who are awarded a California State PTA Continuing Education Scholarship receive a letter of congratulations along with a scholarship check.

For Students
Two scholarships are available for your application:
- $500-$1,000 Volunteer Service Scholarship — This scholarship recognizes graduating seniors for their volunteer service in schools and communities, allowing them to register for courses at accredited colleges, universities, trade or technical schools. Applicants must be PTA members graduating from a California high school between January 1 and June 30 of the current academic year.
- $500 Dr. Ralph E. White Graduating Senior Scholarship – Honoring the volunteer and public-service legacy of Dr. Ralph E. White and his wife, Eleanor, this additional scholarship provides $500 each to two successful applicants of the Volunteer Service Scholarship who intend to pursue a career in a medical field.
Eligibility – For the Graduating High School Senior Scholarship, successful applicants meet the following criteria:
- PTA member graduating from a high school in California between January 1 and June 30 of the current academic year
- Current member of his/ her high school PTA which is in good standing
- Scholarship used during fall semester following high school graduation for studies at accredited colleges, universities, trade or technical schools
- Enroll in courses accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
- Provide proof of enrollment and completion of coursework to California State PTA by June 1
- Completed application and reference forms with letters received by California State PTA by February 1
Selection – Each year, the California State PTA Scholarship and Grant Committee carefully reads and vets each scholarship application. All applicants are notified of their status in March.
Scholarship winners receive a letter of congratulations and recognition certificate from California State PTA along with a check.
Application Tips – Before submitting your scholarship application packet to California State PTA, please remember to check that it includes:
- Completed application form and packet submitted by February 1
- Copy of your current PTA membership card on 81/2″ x 11″ sheet of paper
- Descriptive essay (maximum 2 pages) outlining:
- Your PTA responsibilities
- Your career plans, goals, objective and any other information you feel would be valuable to the selection committee
- All of your school service-related activities including any service you provide to others in your school
- Your volunteer service in the community
- Two (2) completed reference forms and letters, written specifically for this application
- First reference – Written by a community volunteer leader unrelated to you and who you volunteered with
- Second reference – Written by a member of the high school faculty
Remember to ask that reference forms and letters be given to you in a sealed envelope for you to include in your scholarship application packet.
Dr. Ralph E. White Graduating Senior Scholarships – Each year, this program awards a scholarship for $500 to two (2), successful applicants of the Graduating High School Senior Scholarship who intend to pursue a career in a medical field.
Two students selected to receive a Graduating High School Senior Scholarship are awarded an additional $500 from the Dr. Ralph E. White Graduating Senior Scholarship Program.

California State PTA provides funding for PTAs in good standing (average $500-$2,000) to develop programs, activities and events for their communities with the California State PTA Grants Program.
Grants for PTA units, councils and district PTAs are offered in four areas:
- Outreach Translation
- Cultural Arts
- Parent Education
- Healthy Lifestyle
As part of the criteria for an award-winning grant, the PTA applying for the grant must also sponsor the program or project outlined in its application form.
Applications Due – November 15

California State PTA provides funding (on average $500-$2,000) for PTAs in good standing to develop, sponsor and implement model programs and projects for their communities with the California State PTA Grants Program.
The Grant Program is designed for PTAs to build and grow student achievement, parent engagement and family involvement to make a difference in their community.
Categories
Grants for PTA units, councils and districts are available in four (4) areas for your programs and projects:
- Parent Education Grants
- Cultural Arts Grants
- Outreach Translation Grants
- Healthy Lifestyle Grants
Eligibility
For the California State PTA Grant Program, a successful application from your PTA will meet all of the following criteria:
- Program or project is sponsored by your PTA as outlined in your application
- Your PTA is in good standing
- Grant funds awarded to your PTA are expended by June 1
- Your completed application packet is submitted to California State PTA by November 15
Application Tips
Before submitting your grant application packet, please remember to check that it includes:
- Completed application form signed by your PTA president
- Copy of your PTA’s current fiscal year-end audit
- Copy of your PTA’s current fiscal year budget
- Supplemental information and details (maximum 3 pages) on your proposed program or project describing:
- Your program and its purpose including goals, number of students served and expected outcomes
- Activities planned to implement your program and its goals
- Timeline for program or project
- Proposed program budget
- Other funding applied for or received for this program or project
- How your program will be implemented, if less than the amount requested is awarded
- How your program or project will be evaluated
By applying for a California State PTA grant, you can enhance the opportunity to support student achievement, build community engagement and strengthen your PTA.
Selection
Each year, the California State PTA Scholarship and Grant Committee carefully reads and vets each application. All applicants are notified of their status in February.
PTAs selected for grant funding receive a letter of congratulations and recognition certificate from California State PTA along with a check and a grant report form.
PTAs selected to receive a grant also:
- Submit a completed grant report form to California State PTA by June 1 that:
- Describes program’s or project’s purpose and objectives
- Evaluates program or project outcomes including suggested improvements
- Supplies details on budget and actual expenditures for program or project
- Provides copies of any print materials developed
- Return any funds not used for the purpose stated on the original grant application along with the grant report form to California State PTA by June 1
California State PTA and National PTA offer a number of Recognition Award Programs to celebrate the achievements of PTAs, individual members and community partners.
To recognize and encourage the development of successful programs, prizes and funding are available for PTAs in good standing that submit an award-winning application showcasing a model program.
If your PTA organizes programs, activities and events to benefit student achievement, health and wellness and involvement; to build PTA leadership, membership and outreach; or, to enhance the community with parent engagement, advocacy and environment awareness, consider applying for a PTA Recognition Award.
Dynamic PTA programs enrich the lives of children, their families and their communities. That’s why California State PTA and National PTA offer a number of Recognition Award Programs to celebrate the achievements of PTAs, individual members and community partners. All of these awards are designed to recognize and encourage the development of model PTA programs.
In addition, California State PTA provides Service Award Programs to honor and publicly acknowledge the outstanding community service of PTAs, our members and community partners.
